Character swaps taking two seconds? Mashing 'F' but loot just sits there? The dreaded "Reconnecting" wheel?
Even though Genshin Impact is mostly a single-player PvE experience, it runs on a strictly server-authoritative netcode at roughly 30Hz. This means your local device doesn't trust itself. Every time you swap a character, trigger an Elemental Reaction, or pick up a Sweet Flower, your client must send a UDP packet to the HoYoverse servers to ask for permission. If your internet stutters, the server ignores you. Standard speed tests only measure raw TCP download speed, completely missing the micro-stutters that ruin your Spiral Abyss rotations. Our tool simulates exact 30Hz Genshin traffic to expose the hidden packet loss causing your lag.
What this test sends: 30 packets per second of 100 bytes, matching Genshin Impact rather than a generic ping. estimated
HoYoverse publishes no tick rate; 30 Hz is an estimate for the always-online co-op world.
Run the 30Hz test above for at least 60 seconds. Here is what your results mean for Genshin Impact:
Red vertical lines mean your connection dropped data entirely. In Genshin, this triggers the infamous spinning "Reconnecting to server" wheel in the middle of your screen. It also causes damage numbers to completely fail to register after hitting an enemy.
Jitter measures ping fluctuation. If your ping bounces from 40ms to 150ms, your dodge timings (i-frames) become totally unreliable. You will dash away from a Ruin Guard's attack on your screen, but still take massive damage because the server saw you standing still.
High baseline ping causes "Swap Delay" and "Loot Delay." When you press 1/2/3/4 to cycle through your team for Elemental Bursts, the character simply won't swap for a full second. In the Spiral Abyss, this wastes precious seconds on the timer.
If the tool above shows packet loss or high jitter, try these specific fixes.
The Symptom: Permanent 150ms+ ping showing in the top right corner, no matter what internet you use.
Unlike most games, Genshin Impact locks your save data to the region you selected when you created your account. If you live in Europe but accidentally started on the America server, you are permanently routing your traffic across the Atlantic Ocean.
The Symptom: The game constantly freezes to show the "Reconnecting to server" wheel for 3-5 seconds.
Wi-Fi signals drop packets constantly due to walls, microwaves, and neighbor interference. Because Genshin requires a constant stream of 30Hz server validation, dropped packets immediately halt your gameplay.
The Symptom: Massive lag spikes when someone else in the house opens Netflix or TikTok.
Your Genshin combat packets are getting stuck in your router's queue behind large video downloads. The server isn't getting your character swap commands in time.
The Symptom: High ping in Genshin Impact, but perfectly fine ping in other games or Discord.
HoYoverse uses specific cloud datacenters (like AWS and Alibaba Cloud) located in Virginia (NA), Frankfurt (EU), and Tokyo (Asia). Sometimes your ISP takes a terrible, inefficient route to get there.
What you see in game, and which number on this page explains it.
| What you see in Genshin Impact | Look at | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Co-op teleports you back a few steps while exploring | loss | A position correction after missing updates. In single player you would never see it. |
| Domain runs end in a rewind of the last seconds | jitter | The server resynchronises a timed encounter your client had run ahead on. |
| Disconnect at the end of a long session | loss | A run of drops the client could not recover from. The chart dates it. |
| Bad on mobile data, fine on the same line by cable | route | Mobile networks vary in jitter far more than they vary in bandwidth. |
Genshin Impact holds a server connection even when nobody else is in your world, and HoYoverse publishes no tick rate for it - the 30 Hz this page measures at is an estimate for an action RPG of this kind, and the page says so rather than dressing a guess up as a specification. The honest version of the claim is what makes the number worth anything.
The consequence of always-online is that a connection fault shows up as something that does not look like a connection fault. Most of what you do is resolved locally and confirmed afterwards, so packet loss does not stutter the way it does in a shooter; it accumulates until the client and the server disagree too much, and then the game corrects in one visible jump or drops you out entirely. Players read that as instability in the game rather than in the line.
The traffic itself is very light, around 100 bytes per update, which is why the game runs on mobile data that could not carry a video call. Mobile data is also where it hurts most: cellular links deliver unevenly, and an even delivery is what a client running ahead of its confirmations depends on. Jitter is therefore the more useful of the two numbers above for this title, and it is the one a speed test never reports.
Co-op is where all of this becomes measurable, because now the world contains someone whose client is making its own predictions. Two players in the same domain, one on a clean line and one dropping packets, will disagree about where things are - and the one with the problem is usually the one convinced the other is lagging. A minute of measurement settles that argument without either player having to trust the other's word for it.
Character swapping is handled entirely server-side to prevent cheating and hacking. When you press the swap button, your client must send a packet to the HoYoverse server, wait for the server to validate it, and receive the approval packet back before the new character appears. High ping or packet loss severely delays this process.
The "Reconnecting" wheel appears when your device experiences 100% packet loss for a brief moment. Your internet connection to the HoYoverse server was completely severed, usually caused by Wi-Fi interference, a router hiccup, or ISP routing issues. Run the test above to check for red vertical lines (lost packets).
Yes, ping matters heavily in Genshin Impact because of the Spiral Abyss. The Abyss timer is continuous, but if you have high ping, enemies take longer to spawn, damage takes longer to register, and elemental particles take longer to absorb. You can literally lose an Abyss star just to network delay.
Loot pickup requires a round-trip confirmation from the server. You press 'F', your client asks the server if you can have the item, and the server replies to put it in your inventory. High ping extends the time this conversation takes, causing the item to sit on the floor even if you spam the pickup button.
