World of Warships looks like the last game that would care about latency - ships turn slowly, shells fly for ten seconds, and nothing happens quickly. That intuition is wrong in one specific way. Because aiming means leading a target by a fixed number of seconds, your client has to show you where the enemy actually is right now, and every millisecond of delay is a small error in that lead. Over a 15-kilometre shell flight, small errors are misses.

The game interpolates enemy ship positions between updates. Steady updates give you a smoothly moving target you can lead reliably; uneven ones give you a target that drifts and corrects. You will experience that as your aim being correct one salvo and wrong the next with no change in your input - which is jitter, not the dispersion RNG people usually blame.
Torpedo warnings and detection state changes are single events rather than a continuous stream. Losing that one packet means the warning arrives late or the enemy appears already inside your detection range. Loss in this game does not smear gently - it removes discrete pieces of information you needed.
Wargaming runs distinct regional servers and your account is tied to one. Under 80 ms is comfortable and the difference between 40 and 80 is barely perceptible in a game with ten second shell flights. Above roughly 200 ms the lead error becomes large enough to matter at long range.

The instinct that slow games do not care about latency is right about ping and wrong about stability, and World of Warships is the clearest illustration of the difference. Nothing in the game demands a fast reaction. What it demands is an accurate picture: you aim by predicting where a ship will be in eight or ten seconds, and that prediction starts from where your client believes the ship is now.
That belief is interpolated. The server sends position updates and the client draws smooth movement between them. When the updates arrive evenly, the interpolation is close to the truth and your lead is repeatable. When they arrive unevenly, the client is sometimes extrapolating past the last known position and sometimes correcting backwards, and the target you aimed at was never quite where it was drawn. The salvo lands where the picture said, not where the ship was.
This is also why players in this game so often attribute the problem to dispersion. Shell dispersion really is random, so there is always a plausible explanation for a miss that has nothing to do with the network. The tell is consistency: random dispersion produces a spread around the correct point of aim, while an unstable connection produces stretches where salvos are correct and stretches where they are systematically off.
Discrete events make the second half of the case. Torpedo warnings, detection changes and consumable activations are single messages rather than a stream, and there is nothing to interpolate them from. A lost packet does not degrade the information, it removes it, and you find out that a torpedo spread existed when it reaches you. That is why loss on this chart matters even at a level that would be invisible in a game with continuous state.

The Symptom: Loss appears in bursts every few minutes.
Bursty loss is a wireless retry pattern. A high-tier battle lasts up to twenty minutes and one burst during a torpedo warning is the whole match. A cable removes the failure class rather than reducing it.
The Symptom: Ping climbs mid-battle for no in-game reason.
The game's own updater and any household download compete with a small, steady position stream that loses every time. Router QoS that prioritises your machine keeps the position updates smooth, which is what your aim depends on.
The Symptom: The game stutters but this chart is flat.
A clean chart with a stuttering client points at rendering load, not the network - large battles with many ships and water effects are demanding. Lowering water and effect quality will do more than anything you change on the router.
Less than in a shooter, but not zero. Aiming means leading a target for several seconds, so any delay in where you are shown the enemy becomes an error in your lead. At long range that error is the difference between a citadel and a miss.
Because the warning is a single event, not a continuous stream. If that packet is delayed or lost, the warning is late regardless of your average ping. Look for red lines on this chart rather than at the ping number.
Accounts are tied to a regional server, so this is effectively a choice you make once. If you are playing far from your region, that latency is structural and not something a local fix will recover.
Dispersion is genuinely random, but an inconsistent lead is not. If your salvos are correct one minute and consistently off the next, check jitter here before blaming the RNG.
