Unlike most modern games, GTA Online uses a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) mesh network architecture. Instead of communicating with a single dedicated Rockstar server, your router is actively exchanging ~150-byte UDP packets at roughly 30Hz with up to 29 other players around the world simultaneously. This makes GTA Online arguably the most network-sensitive game on the market. If your connection drops packets or jitters, the P2P handshake fails, and the session instantly isolates you. Standard speed tests check TCP downloads, completely missing the UDP packet instability that causes these session splits. Rockstar publishes no rate; sessions are peer-to-peer with Rockstar acting only as broker, so the rate follows the session host.

Red vertical lines mean your connection dropped data entirely. In GTA Online, this triggers the infamous "Session Split." You are driving with your crew, and suddenly the killfeed says everyone left the lobby at once. You didn't get kicked; your router dropped the P2P packets, and the game severed your connection to the other players, dropping you into a solo public lobby.
Jitter measures ping fluctuation. If your ping rapidly bounces from 40ms to 150ms, the physics engine completely breaks. Enemy players will teleport down the street, and NPC traffic will spawn directly in front of your car or swerve erratically. Driving in close formation during a mission becomes physically impossible.
Because the lobby is hosted by a random "Session Host" (another player), high baseline ping means extreme desync. You will shoot a griefer in the head, they will keep running for two full seconds, and then randomly drop dead. It also causes massive delays when buying armor or ammo.

Because GTA is a P2P game, your router must allow incoming connections from 29 other random routers. A Strict or Moderate NAT Type blocks these handshakes.
The Symptom: Randomly dropping out of Heists with the "Connection to the session lost" error.
Wi-Fi naturally drops packets due to interference. When you drop a packet while communicating with a Rockstar cloud server, it retries. When you drop a P2P packet to a session host, they simply boot you to prevent the lobby from lagging.
The Symptom: Cars start floating or teleporting when someone else in the house streams Netflix.
Handling UDP packets from 29 different IP addresses is highly stressful for a standard home router. If someone is downloading a large file, the router queues your game traffic, causing massive P2P desync.
The Symptom: Normal GTA Online runs fine, but you have terrible ping and packet loss on a specific FiveM Roleplay server.
Unlike standard GTA, FiveM runs on dedicated servers (usually hosted by OVH or AWS). Sometimes your ISP takes a highly congested, inefficient route to that specific server host.
They didn't leave; you did. This is known as a Session Split. Because the game is Peer-to-Peer, your router must maintain a constant connection with everyone else in the lobby. If your internet drops packets for even a few seconds, the lobby's network severs your connection to protect the other players from lag, placing you into a solo public lobby.
Rubberbanding is caused by High Jitter and Desync between peers. Since there is no central server dictating where the car is, your client has to guess based on the data it receives from the other player. If their internet (or yours) fluctuates, the car will visually teleport to correct its position.
Because the game is Peer-to-Peer, your ping changes depending on who the "Session Host" is. If you live in New York and the host is in Australia, your ping will be 250ms+, and the lobby will feel terrible. Ideally, you want a ping under 80ms to the session host to avoid hit-registration delays.
While gameplay is P2P, your cash and progress are saved to Rockstar's dedicated cloud servers via TCP. If you get this error, either the Rockstar servers are physically down, or your ISP is struggling to resolve the connection to the Rockstar Social Club domain. Try changing your DNS to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8).
