A cancel is a sequence of inputs that has to land in order and on time; if one of them slips, the chain does not degrade gracefully - it simply does not happen. Add grab-based crowd control, where a single successful grab decides a fight, and you have a game where jitter is felt more sharply than raw ping.

This is the number to watch in BDO. Animation cancelling depends on inputs being processed in the order and rhythm you pressed them. When packets arrive unevenly, the server sees a different rhythm than your hands produced, and the chain breaks. Players describe this as the game 'eating' inputs; it is usually jitter, not the client.
BDO's crowd control revolves around grabs, and grabs ignore most defensive states. Whether you were inside your invulnerability frames when the grab landed is decided by packets arriving on time. Loss here is not a visual problem, it is the difference between escaping and being chained to death.
BDO runs separate regional services that do not share characters, so your ping is largely decided when you pick a region. Under 60 ms is where the cancel timings feel natural; over 150 ms the game remains playable for grinding but high-end PvP becomes guesswork.

Black Desert's combat is unusual in that skill expression lives almost entirely in the transitions between abilities rather than in the abilities themselves. Cancelling an animation early to chain into the next is the core mechanic, and doing it well means issuing inputs within a window of a few frames. The server has to see those inputs in the same order and roughly the same spacing that your hands produced, or the chain it reconstructs is not the one you performed.
This is why jitter, not ping, is the metric that decides how BDO feels. A steady 120 ms connection delays everything by the same amount, and a player adapts to it within an hour - the rhythm is intact, just shifted. A connection that averages 60 ms but occasionally delivers at 200 ms has no stable rhythm at all, and no amount of practice compensates, because the timing that worked last cast is wrong this cast.
Grab-based crowd control raises the stakes further. Most defensive options in BDO are invulnerability frames tied to a specific part of an animation, and grabs bypass most of them. Whether you were inside your frames when a grab resolved is decided entirely by which packets the server had when it evaluated the grab. Lose the wrong one and you are chained from full health, which is why players experience loss in this game as unusually punishing.
The regional structure is what makes all of this worth measuring rather than shopping around for. BDO's services are separate worlds with separate characters, so there is no switching to a closer server after the fact. Your latency floor was set when you created the character; what remains under your control is everything above that floor - the loss and the jitter this test shows.

Node and Conquest Wars put very large numbers of players and effects in one place. Run this test during a bad siege: a clean chart means the server instance is saturated, and the productive response is lowering your effects and player count settings rather than touching your network.

BDO's regional services are fully separate. Playing on a distant region adds latency permanently to every input in a combat system that is built on frame-level timing. If your characters are on the wrong service, no local fix will recover it.
The Symptom: Loss appears in bursts.
Wireless retries produce exactly the bursty pattern that breaks an animation chain, and a Node War is an hour where a single burst can cost the objective. A cable removes that failure mode.
The Symptom: Ping climbs when the household is active.
BDO's combat packets are small and constant and lose easily to a large background upload. Router QoS that prioritises your machine costs the household almost nothing and removes the spikes that break cancels.
