Dota 2 servers operate at 30 Ticks Per Second (30Hz). Every single millisecond matters when you are trying to manta-dodge a spell or perfectly time a Black Hole. Your client sends small, ~150-byte updates to Valve's servers 30 times a second. Because MOBAs rely on rapid, hyper-precise mouse clicks, standard internet speed tests completely fail to diagnose Dota 2 lag. They only test raw bandwidth. Red vertical lines mean your connection dropped data entirely. In Dota 2, this causes "ignored inputs." You press your ultimate, hear the audio cue, but the spell never casts. It also causes massive freezes right as chaotic 5v5 teamfights break out.
Jitter is ping fluctuation. If your ping rapidly bounces from 30ms to 90ms, your muscle memory is rendered useless. Your hero will start "moonwalking" or sliding, and your attack animation canceling will constantly fail because the server delay keeps changing.
Dota 2 features an intentional mechanic called "Turn Rates." When you combine slow hero turn rates with high baseline ping, your hero feels like a truck driving in mud. Dodging fast projectiles like Pudge hooks or Mirana arrows becomes mathematically impossible.

Dota 2 has a built-in engine setting that dictates how aggressively your client requests data from the server. Incorrect settings here will choke your connection.

Wi-Fi naturally drops packets due to interference. The Source 2 engine demands a perfectly steady stream of data to track your rapid APM (Actions Per Minute).
The Symptom: Massive ping spikes when someone else in the house opens Netflix or downloads a file.
Your Dota 2 packets are waiting in line behind other network traffic. Your router is bottlenecking the data queue.
The Symptom: High ping in Dota 2, but perfectly fine ping in Discord and browser speed tests.
Dota 2 uses Valve's SDR network, which bounces your traffic through regional relays to hide your IP. Sometimes, your ISP routes you to a highly inefficient relay node.
This is caused by packet loss. You pressed the hotkey, and your local client initiated the cast animation and sound, but the data packet was dropped by your ISP before it reached Valve's 30Hz server. To the server, you never pressed the button.
To view your live network stats, go to Settings > Options > Advanced Options > Miscellaneous, and check the box for "Display Network Information." This will place a small overlay in the top right corner of your screen showing your FPS, Ping, and Packet Loss.
Because Dota 2 features built-in "turn rates" (heroes take a fraction of a second to physically turn before moving or casting), high ping is extremely punishing. A ping under 50ms is ideal. Anything over 80ms will make last-hitting and dodging skillshots feel incredibly sluggish.
Frame Rate (FPS) is how fast your computer renders graphics, while Ping is how fast your internet talks to the server. If your game is stuttering despite having 144+ FPS, you are experiencing high jitter or packet loss. Run the 30Hz network test above to confirm.
