Understanding Your Internet Health
The ranges below are the ones this measurement was judged by: the low tick rate, where the server updates every 100 ms. A slower game tolerates more; a faster one less. How these thresholds are set →
Ping (Response Time)
- Good: ≤ 80 ms
- Fair: up to 150 ms
- Bad: > 150 ms
High ping is usually caused by distance or a saturated connection (bufferbloat).
Jitter (Stability)
- Good: ≤ 15 ms
- Fair: up to 30 ms
- Bad: > 30 ms
High jitter creates an unstable connection. Packets arrive at inconsistent times, causing "stutter" in games and calls. These two limits are half a tick and a full tick — beyond a full tick your inputs no longer land in a predictable server update.
Packet Loss
- Good: 0.0 %
- Fair: up to 1.0 %
- Bad: > 1.0 %
Any packet loss signals a physical problem. It could be a faulty cable, failing hardware, or network congestion. It's the main cause of connection drops. Unlike the two above, these limits do not move with the tick rate: a dropped packet is a dropped input at every tick rate.
How to Fix Common Problems
Problem: High Jitter
This is usually from wireless interference.
- Test again using an ethernet cable.
- If the jitter is gone on the wired test, your WiFi is the issue.
Problem: Ping Spikes (Line turns red)
This is network congestion at your home.
- Pause any large downloads or cloud backups.
- Check if others are downlaoding or streaming heavily on your network. Your router may be overwhelmed.
Problem: Packet Loss (Red Lines)
This is most of the time a hardware or ISP issue.
- Check your ethernet cables.
- Connect directly to your modem to test your router.
- If the problem continues, show this report to your Internet Service Provider.
